When Should You See a Thyroid Specialist?
You may benefit from seeing an endocrinologist or thyroid specialist if you have abnormal thyroid blood test results, persistent symptoms suggestive of thyroid dysfunction, a thyroid nodule or enlargement of the neck, or a thyroid condition that is difficult to control.
Symptoms that can sometimes occur with thyroid disorders include unexplained changes in weight, palpitations, tremor, heat or cold intolerance, tiredness, changes in bowel habits, changes in menstrual cycles, sleep disturbance, anxiety, muscle weakness or changes in concentration.
These symptoms are not specific to thyroid disease, which is why appropriate testing and clinical assessment are important before determining the cause.
Thyroid Nodules and Neck Lumps
Thyroid nodules are common and many do not cause symptoms. Some are discovered during a medical examination or incidentally during an ultrasound or other imaging study.
If a thyroid nodule is found, assessment may include reviewing its size and ultrasound characteristics, thyroid hormone levels and relevant medical history.
Depending on the findings, further evaluation may be recommended to determine whether monitoring or additional investigation is appropriate.

What Happens During a Thyroid Assessment?

Depending on your situation, your endocrinologist may review or arrange investigations such as thyroid function blood tests, thyroid antibody tests or thyroid ultrasound.

Thyroid Blood Tests and Investigations
Common thyroid tests include TSH and free thyroid hormone measurements, which help assess how the thyroid gland is functioning.
